Simple Seven Grain Bread for Abm

Recipe #313054 | 3¼ hours | 5 min prep | add private note

By: Chicago Clare
Jul 9, 2008

Only a few ingredients, but it makes a big fluffy loaf that looks and tastes store bought (except for the big hole in the bottom from the mixing arm!)

SERVES 12 , 1 loaf (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1/2 cup seven-grain cereal (found in bulk food section of health or organic food stores, or sometimes in regular grocery store)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast

Directions

  1. 1
Add ingredients to your bread machine in order shown (or order your bread machine requires). Set to 1.5 lb loaf on regular bread (not 'whole wheat') setting. Press start -- when done, ENJOY!

I do not believe it is possible to produce a loaf of bread from this recipe as it is written. Having quite a bit of experience making bread and dough in a bread machine, I was skeptical of the amount of water called for, but I tried it first as the recipe states. I ended up having to add at least another half a cup of water. After a lot of watching and adding more water to get a dough ball to form in the machine, it rose okay and the end result was a decent crusty bread. I liked the simplicity of this recipe and wanted to give it a try, but I don't think it's one I would make again.
