Shoarma is so popular in Holland that you might forget it is from the Middle East! When we lived abroad I really missed it and tried to copy the spice mix that you can buy here in the shops. There are many makes and blends in the shops, they all taste different, now try the homemade mix! Note that there is no salt in the mix so do not forget to add with cooking, or if you give this as a gift to mention it.After you have tried this you can always make some changes to suit your own taste.

1 small jar (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
If you have whole spices and the time, dry roast the cumin and coriander seeds in a frying pan for several minutes, let them cool and grind as fine as possible Mix everything together and put in a small jar Shoarma idea for 4: approx 1lb pork, lamb or chicken, cut meat in strips, add 1 tablespoon oil and lemon juice, 1 or 2 teaspoons of the spicemix, add salt to taste, mix and leave for a few hours or overnight.
  2. 2
If you like add some chopped onion, crushed garlic, chopped chili pepper and a chopped sweet pepper to the meat mix.
  3. 3
Fry or grill this until done.
  4. 4
Serve in a wrap or pita bread with a mayonnaise sauce,Tzatziki or try my Yoghurt Chutney recipe#38562 and add some finely chopped cucumber to it.
  5. 5
Use for barbecues, marinades and so on.

FABULOUS!!!! Definitely more garlic and cayenne for our tastes next time though! I used boneless chicken thigh meat that I cut in strips I followed Pets marinating instructions adding more garlic to the mix, I then tucked it into the freezer for a later quick meal. I thawed the meat in the marinade, and then diced and onion and chunked a sweet red pepper. I sauteed with more garlic and salt in olive oil till the meat was done. We served this on pitas topped with tzatziki. Oh my.....I think I will have a packet of this in the freezer for a knock out quick dinner on those nights where you need comfort but not alot of fuss.

Loved it! Super easy and really enjoyed the flavours. I'm not happy with the Pita pockets that they sell here in Australia so found more success with basic wraps and added the following garlic sauce to give it the finishing touch! GARLIC SAUCE: 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup sour cream, 2 cloves of crushed garlic, 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh parsley - combine all ingredents and allow to stand for at least an hour for the flavours to really develop. YUM! Eet smakelijk!!

This was worth waiting for! I marinated 3 boneless chicken breasts (pounded thin) overnight in 2 tbls of oil, 2 tbls of lemon juice and 3 tsp of Shoarma Mix. I pan fried the chicken in butter and served it with garlic green beans. There is no need to add any thing else, the lemon juice works magic with the spice mix. Shoarma Mix would make a wonderful gift as well as a special "secret" ingredient that will make your guests beg you for any recipe you make with it.

This spice mix is ABSOLUTELY Fabulous! My fiance was craving shoarma...as he hasnt had it for almost 3 years since he was in India last... I decided to give it a go, and he was RAVING about how good it came out. I marinated my chicken just as you said to, and grilled to perfection. Put my chicken in grilled pita with loads of tzatziki, some chopped red onion, tomato and lettuce just as he likes it, and he was in shoarma heaven! Thank you SO MUCH... this recipe rocks!
