Seared Tuna With Green Onion-Wasabi Sauce

This is one of our favorite ways to have fresh ahi. I usually add a little more wasabi - but then we love that stuff, lol. I also cook it less time than recommended here because we like it that way and I usually add some sesame seeds as garnish.

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Whisk 1/2 cup water and wasabi powder in medium bowl to form smooth paste.
  2. 2
Whisk in soy sauce, 2 tablespoons peanut oil, sherry, sesame oil and ginger.
  3. 3
    Stir in green onions.
  4. 4
    Set aside.
  5. 5
Sprinkle tuna with salt and pepper.
  6. 6
Heat remaining 1 tablespoon peanut oil in heavy large skillet over high heat.
  7. 7
Add tuna and sear until opaque in center, about 3 minutes per side.
  8. 8
Spoon cucumber onto center of plates.
  9. 9
    Top with tuna.
  10. 10
    Spoon sauce around.
  11. 11
    Garnish with radish sprouts.

We made this a couple of nights ago for dinner and really enjoyed it. It was easy to prepare and had great flavor. I used a little more sesame oil as I realized I was out of peanut oil and skipped the radish sprouts--otherwise I followed all ingredients/directions as posted. It had a very pretty presentation. I would not skip the cuke--I enjoyed the cool flavor in contrast to the heat. I will definitely make this again.

A sophisticated delight. Warning to fledgling wasabi-users like me: I added 3 T of wasabi paste instead of the powdered form...talk about an antihistamine meal! Next time I'll use just a dab so as not to overwhelm the other delicate ingredients. Worked beautifully halved and the cooking time is perfect. Thanks for a wonderful way to prepare this important and healthy fish.

Great recipe! I didn't have cucumber but made the sauce as listed for two tuna steaks. Do try this great recipe. Both quick and delicious.
