Poor Man's Lobster

Recipe #62592 | 20 min | 10 min prep | add private note

This recipe was told to me by the captain of the boat when halibut fishing. It is a very quick, simple, and tasty way to eat halibut!

SERVES 1 -10 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • halibut, cut in about 1 inch cubes
  • butter, for dipping (not margarine)

Directions

  1. 1
Fill a pot with water (about a gallon).
  2. 2
Add 1 cup sugar, and bring to a boil.
  3. 3
Do not ever stir the mixture.
  4. 4
Add chunks of halibut, do not over crowd.
  5. 5
They will sink to the bottom, and then rise to the top when they are done.
  6. 6
It should take just a few minutes.
  7. 7
    Remove with slotted spoon.
  8. 8
Remember to not stir the mixture.
  9. 9
Continue until all the halibut is cooked.
  10. 10
Dip in melted butter and eat!

I won't rate this recipe because I didn't use halibut, I used cod. I didn't really taste much flavor in the fish. I will try it sometime with halibut.

What the recipe is missing is the essential ingredient- an acid, like lemon juice or vinegar, that coagulates the proteins and changes the texture of the fish, making it more lobster like. Sugar is optional, and a cup is far too much.

This works pretty well. It'll sort of satisfy of lobster craving. The sugar makes the halibut sweet like lobster, but I think a bit too sweet. You definitely need to salt the dipping butter to balance the taste. Thanx for posting this!
