Mutter Paneer -- Indian Cheese Curry

Recipe #173381 | 35 min | 15 min prep | add private note

By: Sackville
Jun 17, 2006

A fabulous vegetarian curry, which I got off a blog, www.route79.com — taste and fall in love! You can add a finely chopped hot chilli if you want to spice it up.

SERVES 2 -3 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Put a little bit of oil in a deep, heavy bottomed frying pan and brown the cheese, turning frequently so no sides burn. When it is browned, set aside on a plate.
  2. 2
Add more oil, if needed, to the pan and throw in the onions.
  3. 3
Let them fry until golden, then add the garlic and spices.
  4. 4
Fry some more for a couple minutes, then add the tin of tomatoes and about 1/2 cup of water.
  5. 5
Let simmer for about five minutes, then put in the fried cheese and peas and simmer covered over a low heat for about 20 minutes.
  6. 6
Check the consistency and simmer some more if needed to bring it down to a thickness you like.
  7. 7
Serve with rice and other Indian curries of your choice.

Was my first time making Indian. Seemed like something was missing, so I added 1 cup plain yogurt and cooked additional 5 min. Helped it a lot.

Wow, was this good. I had some store-bought paneer that I wanted to try. I followed the recipe pretty closely. I used canned diced tomatoes. I would say it was a bit salty, and next time I will probably use half the salt. I gave it just a sprinkle of cayenne pepper and ate it with whole wheat pita as I was too lazy to make bread. It makes two very hearty servings. Of course the calorie count listed has to be off because of the oil, but it's still a reasonably healthy dish. Great recipe.
