At the request of my lovely 12 year old daughter, I am posting these, one of her favorite foods. We searched for a recipe together and ended up adapting one to suit our tastes. Enjoy!

12 -16 sticks (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup Italian style breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 lb mozzarella cheese, cut into 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch strips (or you can use string cheese and cut each in half)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup jarred pizza sauce or marinara sauce

Directions

  1. 1
    Whisk eggs and milk together.
  2. 2
Coat each piece of cheese with flour, then dip in egg and then roll in bread crumbs.
  3. 3
Dip in egg and crumbs again.
  4. 4
Heat oil in skillet and cook sticks for about a minute on each side, or until golden and before cheese starts to leak.
  5. 5
    Drain on paper towels.
  6. 6
    Serve with sauce for dipping.

Ultra yummy and just like in restaurants! Only I was able to make these a tad healthier by using low-fat string cheese, used just the egg whites for batter, and homemade panko with Italian seasoning, and fried in olive oil. They also freeze well for re-baking! Served with my Easy Marinara Dipping Sauce for the Lazy for a tasty meal.

These came out perfect. It was my first recipe and first time making these. Your fingers do get a bit messy but its well worth it. This is the only recipe i am going to be using from now on! Thanks for the recipe.

These are a delicious snack that my kids are already begging me to make again (and you better believe I will). Trick I used to keep the cheese from leaking out is to put the sticks on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet following the second rolling in the bread crumbs, and sticking the sheet in the freezer for about an hour before I'm ready to fry the sticks. That way the cheese melts but the coating stays together so they don't leak. Thanks for posting, this recipe is a keeper!

This was a hit with my family. I found that it was more effective in keeping the bread crumbs on when I dipped it in the egg before and after rolling it in the flour and the bread crumbs. It also helped to keep the cheese within the coating a lot better. I still haven't perfected it but I'm getting there.
