Mom's Shawerma(شاورما)

Recipe #13432 | 25 min | 10 min prep | add private note

By: najwa

Before I got married, I had this for lunch every single day (Mom made it for me!)

SERVES 3 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Mix all ingredients, cover and let marinate for an hour.
  2. 2
Cook over medium heat in a large saucepan until done (should be dry).
  3. 3
(I don't like onions and garlic all that much, so i pick the chicken out).
  4. 4
If you can get arabian pita bread from an international store, do so, it is a million times better than pita.
  5. 5
Heat bread, spread with a little mayo.
  6. 6
Put chicken along one side and wrap.
  7. 7
Variations: try adding french fries, or pickles.
  8. 8
Instead of plain mayo, mix some mayo with lemon juice, olive oil and garlic.

Prepared this and as I was about to cook it... lost electricity. So the chicken marinated for a good 24 hours!!! It was tasty but was still missing some spices to my taste. Would make it again but would have it in a sandwich or with some type of sauce. Served it with some white pasta. Made for Holiday Tag. Thanks najwa!

This was good; a little plain for my taste, but yum! Would be good grilled too.

Another excellent recipe, Najwa! I made this tonight for dinner and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I realized (too late) that I didn't have any lemons :-O so I had to use a bit of sumac, which actually worked out pretty well! I doubled the cumin and the ginger too. I served it with a bit of plain yogurt and some rice. Fabulous! And so quick and easy! Thanks for another keeper!

This is delicious! I added a touch of cayenne pepper, just because we like it. I had to use the regular ole pita bread, but it sure was good! Very quick and easy, it's a keeper.
