Marvelous M&m Bars

Recipe #148820 | 40 min | 20 min prep | add private note

This has been one of my favorite cookie recipes since I was a kid. I can't believe I forgot to post it on Zaar until now. I saw quite a few similar recipes when I searched, but none that were made as bar cookies. The original recipe was for drop cookies, but my mom adapted it long ago. These just melt in your mouth. Obviously, the serving size depends upon the size of your bars. I just happened to cut them into 32 pieces last night. Enjoy!

SERVES 32 , 1 jelly roll pan (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Cream shortening, sugars, eggs and vanilla thoroughly.
  2. 2
Sift together flour, soda and salt.
  3. 3
Add dry ingredients gradually to creamed mixture; mix well.
  4. 4
Stir in about 2/3 cup M&Ms. Reserve remaining candy for decorating cookies.
  5. 5
Spread batter in lightly greased jelly roll pan. Decorate top with remaining M&Ms (or as many of them as you desire).
  6. 6
Bake at 375 degrees 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned.
  7. 7
    Cool completely; cut into bars.

Made these for a field trial held by our Gordon Setter Club and these were a big hit. I made two pans of them and there weren't any left over. Thanks!

These were very good. I used smart balance margarine instead of shortening. I used chocolate chips in the bars and m&m's on top(I didn't have enough m&m's) I took them to are high school youth group and they were gone in a flash. Thanks!

I made these for an Easter event and used the pastel Easter M & Ms and they look great! The same could be done at Christmas, Valentine's Day or the 4th of July with colors that correspond with those holidays.
