Lemon Cutting Board Cleaner

Recipe #197402 | 1 min | 1 min prep | add private note

This easy cleaner helps keep wooden cutting boards freshened and sanitized. The lemon and essential oil sanitize the board while the abrasive action of the salt cleans it. If you use your cutting board for raw meat, get into the habit of doing this after each use. Never use the same cutting board for fresh fruits and vegetables as is used for raw meat.

1 cleaning (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon table salt
  • 1 drop lemon essential oil
  • 1 drop tea tree essential oil

Directions

  1. 1
Sprinkle salt onto cutting board. Squeeze a little bit of the lemon juice onto the salt.
  2. 2
Add the essential oil directly on top of the salt/juice mixture.
  3. 3
Hold the lemon half in your hand, flesh side down, and scrub the fragrant salt thoroughly over the cutting board. Be sure to get all the nooks and crannies. Repeat as necessary.
  4. 4
Rinse the board under warn running water and set in drying rack to dry before storing. This will make your kitchen smell great too!

This worked great. I didn't realize you could use tea tree oil on eating surfaces. I will use this more often. Thanks.

My mom had taught me that little trick years back. Works like a charm!

I use this every time I use my cutting board... which is pretty often!!! I like to use kosher salt and like to mix up the EO's... I like lemon, lime, tea tree and sometimes pink grapefruit... this really does sanitize the board and leaves the kitchen sink smelling sweet too!

Good idea, can't wait to try this! Back to give a rating. I just tried this because I had used a lemon and lime from another recipe, and wanted to find something useful to do with the rest. (I used your lemon scrub for my hands too to use up leftover lime and lemon juice), and used the leftover rinds of the lemon for this. I have two cutting boards, one is glass? the other I'm not sure about. I used lemon and tea tree essential oil, table salt, and the lemon rind as directed. This was kind of fun, a bit messy though, so I had to do it over the sink, then I lost a lot of the salt mixture. I'm not sure how well this worked. One of the cutting boards smells strongly of onion and garlic and was hoping this would get rid of it, but it didn't really. I do feel comfortable that I sanitized my boards, even if I can't tell. Anything that makes cleaning fun is a plus in my book, if it's effective and natural and easy to use, then that's more pluses. Thanks for sharing!
