Kool-Aid Scented Play Dough

Recipe #56797 | 5 min | 2 min prep | add private note

By: MapleLeafLili Hill
Mar 21, 2003

When I lived in Alberta, Canada, there was a lady who sold this play-dough at the local farmer's market. It smelled soooo good, that I decided to try making it myself.

1 batch (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (I use Crisco oil)
  • 2 packages of the same flavor kool-aid unsweetened flavored drink mix
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 5 teaspoons cream of tartar

Directions

  1. 1
In a pot, combine water, oil, Kool-Aid, and salt.
  2. 2
Heat and stir until salt dissolves.
  3. 3
Add Flour and cream of tartar all at once to above.
  4. 4
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until well mixed and dough forms a ball, (this should only take a couple minutes).
  5. 5
Remove from heat once the dough forms into a ball.
  6. 6
Cool on a clean baking sheet, kneading the dough as soon as it is cool enough to handle.
  7. 7
Cool completely, and let your kids play away!
  8. 8
(On occasion, I've mixed in a matching essential oil to enhance the fruity scent if I only have one package of a Kool-aid flavour on hand.) Store this Play Dough in a resealable plastic baggy or plastic container.
  9. 9
It should last for a couple months, depending on how often your children play with it.

I love the way this play dough turned out! I haven't found a better recipe out there! It doesn't dry out your hands while playing with it and it is nice and smooth. For some reason the first time I made it the dough remained sticky even though I added quite a bit more flour (I didn't add COLD water, just tap water...I don't know if that was the problem?) Anyway, the second time I made it I followed the directions EXACTLY and it came out perfect. This is a keeper! Thank you!

This is a great recipe, my mom made it for me when i was younger, so I wanted to try it myself. After it cooled, i divided it into 3 pieces, and added uncooked rice to one, and uncooked grits to another, for texture. I also added coconut extract to one, and almond extract to another one. I used cherry kool-aid and the cherry almond scent smells delicious! I was afraid that the dough would stain onto skin, but it doesn't. Thanks so much for the recipe!

I have a very similar recipe that is just wonderful and a bit simpler than the one posted. Instead of cooking all the ingredients, all you do is combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and pour in the boiling water. I use my stand mixer's paddle attachment and let it go to work. Super easy, and only one bowl to wash!
