Kittencal's Taco Seasoning Mix

After experimenting with many different spice combinations over the years for me this is the closest to the store-bought package taco seasoning --- I always increase this recipe 10x and keep in a glass jar tightly covered in my fridge to have ready for recipes, if you like lots of heat then adjust the cayenne pepper to taste or you may omit completely, if you can find some dried granulated tomato powder then add about 1-2 teaspoons with the mix, I purchase mine at a bulk spice store it really gives the seasoning a lift, the amounts stated are equivalent to one package taco seasoning mix — don't save this mix to use only for tacos, add some in your recipes to kick up the flavor, it's even great in chili, ground beef mixture for casseroles, stew, soups, and add some into you hamburger mixture for burgers, I even add this to my Parmesan meatballs --- this also makes a great gift for the cook on your list just increase amounts and present in a fancy glass jar.

1 equivalent pkg. (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Combine all ingredients (double or triple if desired) .
  2. 2
Store tighty sealed in a small glass jar until ready to use (I store mine and all spices in the refrigerator).
  3. 3
**NOTE** this is only optional, if using the mix for tacos you might want to add in some flour into the seasoned cooked ground beef to thicken, I also add in about 1-1/2 cups tomato sauce and simmer, stirring for 20 minutes over low heat.

This is the best!! I use Mexican seasoning quite often. I have been using Mexican seasonings for years. The brand I bought, McCormick, is no longer selling, so this really came at the best time! Many thanks Kit. A truly great recipe! I forgot where I got this recipe and when I had cause to need a good recipe for this, I looked here and found that I'd already rated it some time ago. Glad I found it, now it's safe and sound! It lasts quite a while as I recall.

I have used this for a while, but I thought I should finally review it. This is very close to store-bought taco seasoning, with one big difference: I can easily adjust the spice level to meet my needs for that meal. I usually make up a double batch and add about 1 T of corn starch right to the seasoning mix. This helps thicken it just a bit when I cook my taco meat. :o) Thanks, Kittencal!

Perfect blend of flavor! I think this tasted better than the store-bought kind, because I was able to make it less salty. I omitted the onion powder but otherwise followed the recipe to a tee. I put it right into some ground turkey that I was browning. After the turkey was brown, I lowered the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes to absorb all the flavor. That's when DH started asking what was for dinner and what smelled so good. Then we put the meat onto nachos and the flavor was perfection! Thanks for a keeper.
