Jack's Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

Recipe #177898 | 1½ hours | 1 hour prep | add private note

By: Miss Nancy
Jul 17, 2006

A "friend" of ours told my husband that invitations to social functions depend him bringing his famous ice cream. This is very rich. This recipe was taken from the Kansas City Star Newspaper August 19, 1958.

SERVES 24 , 1 1/2 gallons (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Mix corn starch with 1/2 cup milk.
  2. 2
Add to 1 1/2 cups milk and cook in double boiler until thick and smooth. Stir constantly to avoid lumps.
  3. 3
Add slightly beaten eggs to this mixture slowly as it cooks. (this is safer than using raw eggs of original recipe).
  4. 4
Blend sugar, salt and evaporated milk with electric mixer in a large bowl.
  5. 5
Add hot corn starch mixture and blend well.
  6. 6
Add whipping cream, remaining milk and vanilla. Mix well.
  7. 7
Pour into 1 1/2 gallon electric or hand freezer container.
  8. 8
Add paddle and put on the lid.
  9. 9
    Set container down in freezer.
  10. 10
Pack area around container with layers of ice and salt until entirely covered.
  11. 11
    Crank until firm.
  12. 12
    Remove paddle.
  13. 13
    Pour off excess water.
  14. 14
Add more crushed ice and salt around container.
  15. 15
    Cover with towel.
  16. 16
Store in shaded or cool area until time to serve.
  17. 17
Makes 1 1/2 gallon of the best ice cream you have ever eaten.

Sounds good. Wanting to try it, but you've listed 1 quart of half and half in the ingredients, but not in the directions. Where does it go? Sorry to write this in the review, but couldn't send you a message. Will try to figure it out and re-review.

My husband received an ice cream churn for father's day. This was the first time we had made homemade ice cream. This recipe was absolutely fantastic. My father-in-law said it was the best that he had ever eaten. Thanks for sharing.
