Hummingbird Nectar

Recipe #62537 | 11 min | 1 min prep | add private note

By: gingerkitten D
May 19, 2003

This is my little hummingbird friend's favorite nectar. I know some people don't add the coloring, but my little hummer refuses to drink unless it is red. If you have a less picky humminbird then you don't need to bother with the coloring. I have heard conflicting informations from "experts" regarding the use of food color. If your hummingbird doesn't object...leave it out...mine does object and hasn't had problems so I use it. Luckily I live in Florida and can enjoy seeing hummingbirds all year long! :o)

4 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup superfine sugar
  • 3-5 drops red food coloring (optional)

Directions

  1. 1
Combine ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. 2
Allow sugar to dissolve and remove from heat.
  3. 3
Let the nectar cool and then pour into your feeder.
  4. 4
Store remaining nectar in the refrigerator.

So easy to make and keeps the hummingbirds coming back for more! So much better than buying the powder or liquid! Thanks for posting this recipe, it is used weekly at our place!

Should have checked here first! Just made the nectar and I am anxiously awaiting our first visitors. They love my flowers so this should make for a nice appy before the flowers are fully bloomed & ready. Can't wait to see our annual visitors up close!

I too live in Florida and feed the hummers when around from March - September. I boil water (from my r/o system) take it off the heat and stir in the sugar to dissolve. I have read that by boiling the sugar in the water the molecular makeup of the sugar changes. I do not use any food color. I change the sugar/water ratio based on the time of the year. More sugar to water early on and towards the end of the season. I have hummers all day long. I am sure whatever "recipe" is used, they are happy. Aren't they just amazing?

My hummingbirds love this solution too but I leave out the red food coloring since my feeder is red.
