Golden Beef Stew

Recipe #50334 | 2½ hours | 20 min prep | add private note

This is THE only way I make my beef stew! It is very similar to the ol' Dinty Moore brand (but homemade). We like it very much. It really is very easy to make and great on a cold winter day! The gravy thickens quite nicely on its own cause you stir in the extra flour while browning the beef! I have been making this stew for more than 10 years and would love for you to try it!

SERVES 4 -6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Put 3-4 tablespoons oil in stew pot or dutch oven.
  2. 2
Cube steak and shake in Bisquick (I shake mine in a zip lock bag).
  3. 3
Brown in hot oil in stew pot or dutch oven.
  4. 4
Add remainder of Bisquick from the bag and stir into the meat, then add broth, onion flakes, sugar, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to taste.
  5. 5
Stir well and bring to boil.
  6. 6
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
  7. 7
    Stir occasionally.
  8. 8
After 1 1/2 hours uncover and stir in carrots and potatoes and cook until tender (about 1/2 hour or so).
  9. 9
    Stew should thicken nicely.
  10. 10
Add frozen peas last 10 minutes of cooking.
  11. 11
    Serve and enjoy!

This was my first time ever making beef stew and it was great! Not only was it delicious, but the recipe was SO easy to make. Plus, to have everything in one pot made cleanup a breeze. I used 4 tsp oil instead of tbsp (just to make it a little less fattening), I chopped up a small onion instead of using onion flakes, and I also added 2 cloves of garlic. I sautéed the garlic and onion with the sirloin before adding the broth. This recipe was delicious. Next time I will add some frozen green beans along with the peas at the end. Thanks!

I've made this recipe as written and it was pretty good! This last time I made it with a few changes: 1/2 lb. beef, 4 carrots, 2 potatoes, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 3 1/2 cups of broth, a can of diced tomatoes (undrained) and a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes. I also omitted the worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and sugar. Even better than the first time I made it! Thanks for posting this yummy, comforting dish!

I made the stew exactly as directed using flour (was out of Bisquick) added button mushrooms. This stew has a great flavor and consistency. Easy to make and very tasty! Definitely will keep this recipe!

I will make this again, but will use less ketchup as I thought the flavor of it was too strong. I liked the easiness of preparation and served it with sour dough rolls to dip in the gravy/broth. I also added a bit more beef broth to make it a little thinner.
