This comforting chocolate dessert (a cake with its own sauce) is a favourite with my family; I've been making it for years. It's so easy to whip up, and inexpensive too. I'm positive this was a Company's Coming recipe, although I don't remember in which particular book I found the recipe.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. 2
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, first amount of cocoa, baking powder and salt.
  3. 3
    Add milk and oil.
  4. 4
Mix together with a spoon and scrape into an 8-inch casserole that is fairly deep.
  5. 5
In the same bowl, mix brown sugar and second amount of cocoa together.
  6. 6
    Add hot water (not boiling).
  7. 7
Stir to dissolve sugar, then pour over batter but DO NOT stir.
  8. 8
Bake, uncovered, for 40 minutes; batter should have risen above the sauce and be firm to the touch.
  9. 9
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or Cool Whip.

This was not sweet, a weird texture, and didn't taste very good hot or cold. My mom agreed. This will never get made again in my house, even though it was very easy.

Ok, I had to jump in and rate this recipe because I've made it for years. The description probably doesn't give the full details. The cake is more of a slightly "cakey" pudding and it has a great runny sauce that acts as a hot chocolate sauce for ice cream!!!! I will pop this in the oven about 1/2 hour before dinner, let it sit on the oven for a bit and serve it in bowls with scoops of vanilla ice cream -it's a wonderful hot fudge dessert that isn't overly sweet. Guests always love it at this house.
