I found the original recipe on a McCalls recipe card. I like it smothered in corn syrup.

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Beat eggs with milk.
  2. 2
Stir in sugar, vanilla, orange juice, and salt until well combined.
  3. 3
Heat about 2 tsp.of butter in a skillet on medium-high heat.
  4. 4
Dip bread in egg mixture and lay in butter.(not you-the bread!).
  5. 5
Reduce heat to medium and cook bread a few minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. 6
(My pan holds 2 pieces at a time.) Repeat with remaining bread, adding more butter to skillet, as needed.

The family thought it was great! We'll be making it again. Since my son doesn't like syrup, I sprinkled his with powered sugar.

I made this twice with Yogi's tasty bun recipe.. I made a loaf of that bread just to try out some new french toast recipes.. and I made this recipe for french toast..TWICE already... once with Orange Juice, and the other time using lemon juice instead of orange juice. Both times it was absolutely marvelous!!!!! When I made it with Lemon, I left out the vanilla.. and it was fabulous!!! Thanks for the recipe!!!

This was a winner!!! I did not have any so this is just from my 5 kids point of view. They loved it. I ended up doing enough for 12 servings and cutting the extra up into french toast sticks and flash froze them for later use now that the kids are homeschooled. They will make a nice quick breakfast.
