I love whole grain cereals! This is a hearty and healthy way to start the morning. I got this off the internet and changed it a bit.

3 1/4 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
You need a blender(or food processor, or better yet, a coffee grinder) to make this recipe.
  2. 2
    Get out your coffee grinder.
  3. 3
Measure the dry oatmeal into it.
  4. 4
Whirl the oatmeal until it is powdery, like flour.
  5. 5
Dump the oatmeal into a mixing bowl.
  6. 6
Measure the barley into the blender.
  7. 7
    Process it until powdery.
  8. 8
Dump it into the bowl with the oatmeal.
  9. 9
Measure the brown rice into the blender.
  10. 10
    Process it until powdery.
  11. 11
The rice will take longer processing than the oatmeal or barley.
  12. 12
It will be a tiny bit coarser after blending too, that is alright.
  13. 13
When it is as powdery as you can get it, dump it into the bowl with the other grains.
  14. 14
Add the whole wheat flour and the cornmeal, along with the sesame seeds, is using.
  15. 15
Stir the mixture up to combine it thoroughly.
  16. 16
Transfer the mixture to a resealable container and label.
  17. 17
    Store on the pantry shelf.
  18. 18
    Makes 3 1/4 cups.
  19. 19
To Cook: 1/3 cup 5 Grain Cereal, 1 cup cold tap water, Dash Salt, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar(or 1 tbls. honey).
  20. 20
In a small saucepan combine the cereal and cold water.
  21. 21
You use cold water because it prevents lumps.
  22. 22
Add the salt and brown sugar.
  23. 23
Bring to a boil over high heat.
  24. 24
Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes.
  25. 25
    Serve with milk.
  26. 26
    Makes 1 serving.
  27. 27
To make 4 servings, use 1 cup of 5 Grain Cereal, 3 cups of cold tap water, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/3 cup brown sugar.
  28. 28
This is a very healthy and hearty way to start the morning.
  29. 29
I like this cereal much better than most other mixed grain cereals I have tried.
  30. 30
The rice gives the cooked cereal a nice chewy texture which contrasts nicely with the smoothness of the whole wheat flour and cornmeal.
  31. 31
If you don't have quick barley, you can replace it with more oatmeal, or even wheat germ, or wheat bran.
  32. 32
I've also thought that Rye Flour might make a nice addition, although I have never tried it.
  33. 33
This cereal is an excellent source of B vitamins and fiber.

Till now I've been a major fan of Cream of Wheat. But I thought there must be some way to make it myself and avoid preservatives, etc. This recipe hit the nail on the head! I love how versatile it is. I used everything you mention here but the cornmeal. I added in oat bran and wheat bran and ground pecans. Wow, this is so flavorful and my favorite way to start the day. Thank you.

Good. I used dried, chopped dates for the fruit. I added brown sugar and cream to our servings. I'm enjoying it, and it was nice to have breakfast ready and waiting. Thanks! Made for Holiday TAG

Yummy!!! I made exactly as instructed, but omitted the optional sesame seeds. I don't know what kind of wicked blender you have, but even my Cuisenart food processor couldn't process the barley and rice to much of a flour. I combined the two in the processor with the hopes that the added volume might help them process, but I still ende d up with some chunks. I like some texture and they were small enough that I figured they would cook through (they did, by the way). Next time I might just go ahead and do the grinding of those two in my coffee grinder and be done with it. I processed the oats very fine, although next time I might do so a little less- I think I just went a little to far. I just made a bowl which was very good- just enough texture- not so much as real oatmeal, but not just mush. I was kind of surprised at how much flavor it has- you tend to think of grains as just being kind of ambiguously grain-flavored, but you could taste the variety in this. I think that I could have actually done with less brown sugar. I added some spices (cinnamon, cardamom, a dash of allspice) and vanilla, but this is actually so flavorful that I don't think it really needs it! I don't usually like oatmeal with milk (the only other hot cereal I've ever tried, really, I think) but this was terrific with milk drizzled over! Thanks for posting; This is great comfort food!

I followed the directions exactly...except added 1/2 cup ground flax seed to the mix. Prepared as directed, this is a very good hot cereal. My niece claimed to like it better than her usual chocolate Malt-o-Meal! I used this mix in some of my Christmas gift baskets this year. It was well received.
