This recipe is so easy, yet so delicious. You can change up the type of meat (I have used a combo of beef, chicken and/or sausage) and use whatever veges you choose. It always comes out a winner! Whenever I bring it to a carry-in, I am inevitably asked for the recipe! *Lately I use a 15 3/4 ounce can of beef broth in place of the water and beef base, and increase the flour to 4 Tablespoons.

SERVES 6 -8 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Saute beef, onion, celery and garlic in a large pan until well done.
  2. 2
    Strain off fat.
  3. 3
Boil potatoes until fork tender, about 20 minutes.
  4. 4
    Drain and mash with butter.
  5. 5
Blanch carrots (or microwave until al dente) and add to beef mixture.
  6. 6
Make a gravy with beef base and water. Whisk in enough flour to thicken, about 2 tablespoons. When gravy comes to a boil, add beef and carrot mixture.
  7. 7
Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. 8
Spoon meat mixture into a 2-quart casserole. Spoon potatoes on top.
  9. 9
Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
  10. 10
Top with cheese and let sit until cheese melts from the radiated heat; approximately 5 minutes.

I've never had Shepherd's Pie before but DH has been asking for it. Mine took on a 'south of the border' flair since I added a poblano pepper, corn and topped with instant southwest mashed potatoes. Very tasty, thanks for sharing!

I don't really like Shepherd's Pie we do in Quebec (beef, corn and mashed potatoes). But this version is so good. I love it and I'll do it again. I love all the veggies in it. I added green bell pepper. I love the sauce with the beef base (I used no-sodium). I heated the sauce in the microwave. I cooked the carrots in the microwave also. When the cheese was a little bit melted, I decided to put the oven at Broil to broil the cheese. Yummy! Thanks Cooks4_6 for a yummy meal Made for 123 hit wonders.

I love Shepherd's Pie - usually I serve mine with corn... but my dbf doesn't like corn... so this was PERFECT!! Loved the added celery and carrots and LOVED THE CHEESE ON TOP!!! Thanks Cooks! Made for Zaar Tag.
