Easy Modelling Clay

Recipe #51816 | 30 min | 10 min prep | add private note

By: Kate in Ontario
Jan 17, 2003

I found this recipe on a website called squiglysplayhouse.com while I was trying to help my kids with a school project. We were trying to create a medieval church. It is a simple recipe that takes very little time and costs a lot less to make than buying modelling clay.

1 ball (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Preheat oven to 350.
  2. 2
Mix all ingredients together until you have a soft ball of dough-if too dry add a bit of water.
  3. 3
Sprinkle some flour on counter and knead it until smooth and stretchy.
  4. 4
Shape the dough any way you want-use a toothpick or straw for making holes.
  5. 5
When finished shaping, put on cookie sheet and bake 20 minutes or until hard-timing depends on size of your piece of art.
  6. 6
Place on wire rack to cool.
  7. 7
Once cool, you can paint them.
  8. 8
When paint is dry a clear varnish can be added to give your creation a wonderful shine.

This really is a great recipe. In europe, we call this kind of dough Salt Dough, Saltzteig or Saltdeig. Experiment a little with adding more oil to make it supple - if you add too much, just add flour to dry it out a bit again. Wall-hanging sculptures are really fun to make, but you can also make standing people or things.

This turned out wondfull. We had alot of fun with it. I found if we made the shapes to thick we had to cook them a bit longer. I did turn some of them over after the tops where cooked,to cook the bottom just a bit. Had fun and will keep having fun with this. Thanks Kate..... Sheila
