Many variations to Ham Bone (or Hocks) and beans but this is pretty much how I remember it from my childhood. I find by not soaking the beans they have better texture and flavor.I use Great Northern Beans as my favorite choice of bean for this recipe. I have used 15 bean mix with good results just omit the ham flavor packet. For the chicken stock I make Kittencal's Kittencal's Best Chicken Stock/Broth (Crock Pot Option).

SERVES 8 -10 (change servings and units)

Directions

  1. 1
Add onion and celery to crock pot.

Place ham bone or hocks on top of onion and celery.

  5. 5

When ham is tender (6-7 hours) Remove meat from bones (discarding fat and bones) and return meat to the pot. Stir to combine and break up ham pieces.

I dislike split pea and ham soup, but having my first ham bone AND crock pot, I wanted to make a soup. I chose this recipe because it was so simple. I did the recipe exactly as described (no carrots) but added some fresh cilantro with the celery and onions for a little more jazz. Soup turned out great! I will make again! Thanks!

This was very good! I had a very meaty ham bone leftover from Christmas dinner. I used kidney beans that I soaked overnight (I had already started soaking when I found this recipe), more onion and some carrot, but left out the celery since I don't like it. This cooked all day on low. We took the ham bone off and cut the ham and put it back in, and then added 2 bags of boil in bag brown rice (we opened the bags and poured it in) with it cooking on high. Nice on a cold windy night, and there is enough to freeze for another meal.

Very good and filling! I soaked my beans and used 3 ham hocks. I also used 2 cans of chicken broth and 1 can of beef broth along with 1 small can of V-8. Delish! Thanks for sharing this keeper!
