Crock Pot Fat Free Refried Beans for the Freezer - OAMC

Recipe #107760 | ½ day | 15 min prep | add private note

It's nice to have some refried beans you can pull out of the freezer for a side with your Mexican meals without opening a can with all the extra fat. One side serving is 1/2 cup, which also makes about 4 tacos or burritos These are a great side dish, may also be used for burritos, and can be served as a main dish with plenty of shredded cheddar and salsa on top. Take the time and make these ahead. You won't be sorry!

2 quarts (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Drain soaked beans and place in a crock pot along with remaining ingredients except salt. Make sure that the beans are covered with liquid by about 1".
  2. 2
Stir well, cover and cook on low all day, about 8-10 hours, until tender. Keep an eye on them and make sure they don't get dry.
  3. 3
    Add salt.
  4. 4
Use a potato masher or heat safe (canning) jar bottom to mash well and stir with a wooden spoon.
  5. 5
Continue to mash and stir until desired consistency.
  6. 6
To freeze, put in a freezer Ziploc and flatten into a layer to freeze, or no more than 2" deep in freezer containers.

Don't really know what happened here but my beans had absolutely no taste. I don't know what I could have did wrong. I had to do a lot of doctoring to this recipe. I may have messed up after all of the "or this or that" ingredients. I read most of the reviews too. Not a keeper here.

Oops Tish I thought I already rated this. I love this recipe. I was surprised to see coffee listed, but it gives good flavor. I did put in more garlic and cumin because I love the flavor. I also added salsa to the mix- i usually add this to my refried beans. It froze well and my family loved it. It will be a regular. Thx for another great recipe Tish keep them coming.

This was my first attempt at making refried beans and this recipe walked me through it with ease. I am the only one who likes refried beans and by making it myself, I can package it in single servings just for me. This recipe is so much cheaper than storebought and I can control the spiciness too. Thanks for sharing this recipe, it is a great addition to the OAMC collection
