Cracker Barrel Fried Apples

Recipe #106262 | 35 min | 20 min prep | add private note

Dec 16, 2004

I grew up eating fried apples and then as an adult I discovered Cracker Barrel and their fried apples. This recipe is from another site and is as close as I have seen to Cracker Barrel. The recipe says you can freeze the cooked apples. I have never done this as there is never any left.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
In a medium skillet, combine the 2 cups apple juice and sliced apples.
  2. 2
Simmer gently until apples are fork tender but not mushy, turning apples frequently.
  3. 3
Remove apples from juice using a slotted spoon and place in an oven safe dish.
  4. 4
In a blender, combine the remaining 1/2 cup apple juice, cornstarch, apple pie spice and sugar.
  5. 5
Blend a few seconds until smooth.
  6. 6
Whisk mixture into hot apple juice in skillet and cook, stirring constantly on medium high heat until it bubbles and becomes thickened and smooth.
  7. 7
Pour thickened mixture over apples and serve.
  8. 8
Please note the cooking time is an approximate.

Very easy, very yummy, very versatile. I served it with pancakes, and I can also see serving it as a side dish with pork chops or as topping on ice cream. A keeper!

I don't know what happened here... I made the recipe exactly as written and in the end all we could really taste was the cornstarch. And even though I whisked continuously and took the sauce off the heat as soon as it thickened a little, I still ended up with globs...I'm having really bad luck with my apple recipes recently..

Wow, these taste so much like Cracker Barrel's! I even used pumpkin pie spice (which I didn't realize until I was on the final step..oops!), and they still tasted like the restaurant's fried apples! These were a nice treat to have with our dinner...thanks! Edited to add this tip: I didn't feel like digging my blender out, so I simply whisked those ingredients together, and that worked just fine.

I cooked the apples for 20 minutes. For the spice mix I used 1 teaspoon cinnamon,1/2 nutmeg grated, and 1/2 teaspoon cardamom. I use my vanilla sugar. Flavored Sugars Flavored Sugar or Splenda. These apples would be great on anything from ice cream to a pork roast.
