Colored Rice

Recipe #115763 | 5 min | 5 min prep | add private note

Was looking for a different craft for my students to do in Catechism class and found one that uses colored rice. Coloring the rice was so easy and perfect for our Easter craft. Recipe originally came from www.dltk-kids.com, but I mixed up the food coloring to get some different shades.

1 Cup Colored Rice (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons rubbing alcohol
  • 12 drops liquid food coloring (color of choice)
  • 1 cup uncooked white rice
  • aluminum foil
  • baking sheet

Directions

  1. 1
In a ziplock bag, combine alcohol rub and food coloring.
  2. 2
Pour in the rice and close the bag.
  3. 3
(You better close the bag unless you want to change the color of your kitchen, LOL).
  4. 4
Shake the bag well (like the shake and bake stuff).
  5. 5
Place a piece of aluminum foil on a cookie sheet and pour the rice onto it.
  6. 6
Let dry for about 1/2 a day in a warm and airy place.
  7. 7
Use for any type of craft.

I've been doing this for years and it always turns out great. Like Charlotte J, I've also used it on assorted pasta shapes, and have even tried it on egg shells (to use in mosaics). Easy, colorful and inexpensive - and a LOT cheaper than buying the premade stuff from the teacher catalogs/stores!

AWESOME!!!!!!! I have 4 cookie sheets sitting on our deck drying in the sun. My mom-in-law must be one of the rare people who still celebrate May Day, and this will be an unusual surprise for my nieces and nephews when my DS's deliver May Day baskets to their cousins. I'll be busy making up 15+ baskets! Will be nicer than using raffia or the usual left-over easter grass. I used the New 'Neon' food Colors. These kids are always in a treat when it comes to me "the funnyfun aunt" THANKS A BUNCH Chippie!!!

This colored rice is so economical and easy to make. I have also used this recipe with pasta of different shapes…bow ties, shells, spirals, macaroni, stars even with alphabet pasta. The pastas make the neatest faces and the kids can sign their name using the colored alphabet pasta.
