Classic Beef Stew in a Crock Pot

Recipe #102191 | 4¾ hours | 35 min prep | add private note

By: Mrs.Habu

This is the best beef stew I've ever made. It tastes great with a crunchy loaf of bread. I got this recipe from Real Simple (March 2004 edition). You'll need a 4 to 6 quart slow cooker. Browning the beef adds more flavor.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Put the flour in a large Ziploc bag.
  2. 2
    Add the beef and seal.
  3. 3
Toss to lightly coat the beef.
  4. 4
Heat a few tablespoons of the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. 5
Brown the meat in small batches, adding more oil as necessary.
  6. 6
    Transfer to the slow cooker.
  7. 7
Add the onions to the skillet and cook over medium heat until tender, about 10 minutes.
  8. 8
Stir in the tomato paste and coat the onions then transfer to the slow cooker.
  9. 9
Pour the wine into the skillet and scrape up any browned bits and then add to the slow cooker.
  10. 10
Stir in the potatoes, carrots, broth, salt, thyme, and bay leaf.
  11. 11
Cover and cook on low heat for 7 1/2 hours or on high for 4 hours.
  12. 12
Add the peas and heat through before serving.

This is a very good stew recipe. After reading the reviews I also added some fresh garlic. I cooked this on the stove instead of the crock pot and found the longer it sat the better the flavors blended. Next time I may make this a day in advance. Thank you Mrs. Habu we all enjoyed your"classic Beef Stew".

This is without a doubt the best beef stew I have ever easten! I made it exactly as directed except to add a little chopped garlic. Everything was closed for a snowstorm so we were cooped up in the house all day. While cooking it smelled so good it made our mouths water! I served it with #46501 Basic Machine French Bread and my family gobbled most of it right up. I barely saved enough to take to work for lunch the next day! Thanks Tali for a great new favorite!

Bless you for a stew that my husband ate every bite of, 2 nights in a row. Next time I might add garlic & I might look for a better (beefier) brand of broth (or heaven forbid, make my own...). Easy recipe & came out exactly as described. MANY thanks.
