Cinnamon Rolls (Raw Foods)

I found this in the newsletter from my local health food store. They got it from goneraw.com and say it's good with Creamy Cashew Icing (Raw Foods) . They can be eaten right out of the refrigerator or warmed up in a dehydrator. The newsletter editor/raw foodist tops them with raw almond butter mixed with agave, vanilla, and sea salt or the aforementioned cashew icing. The "cooking time" is an estimate of the chilling time.

8 1-inch rolls (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Combine almond meal, flaxseed, cayenne, 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon, and pinch salt in a bowl and set aside.
  2. 2
In food processor or blender, process dates, water, and vanilla into a paste.
  3. 3
Put half the date paste, the olive oil, and the agave nectar into the dry ingredients and mix with hands until a dough is formed. You might need to add a little water or agave if it's too dry but be careful not to add too much.
  4. 4
Spread dough on a piece of parchment paper and shape into a 1/4-inch thick square.
  5. 5
Add 1/4 cup raisins and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon to the date paste remaining in the blender. Process until smooth.
  6. 6
Spread a thin layer of this mixture onto the dough square, covering the whole surface, and sprinkle with the extra raisins and the chopped walnuts.
  7. 7
Using the parchment paper to hold everything together and carefully roll the square tightly into a log.
  8. 8
Chill in the refrigerator and slice into 1-inch thick rounds.

Well, I didn't have the cashews for the icing but tried these plain. They aren't the traditional cinnamon roll, of course, but if you can get the health benefits of the flax seeds and the good flavor of cinnamon you can't complain about that. The kids liked them too. These can definitely give you a cinnamon roll fix without resorting to the fat and processed sugar of traditional cinnamon rolls. Thanks for sharing.

This recipe is totally unlike anything I've made before, & of course, the rolls aren't like any other 'cinnamon roll' I've tasted, either! That said, THESE ARE VERY, VERY TASTY TREATS, & well worth the making! I was surprised at the cayenne pepper here, but that, along with all the other ingredients, made for some very satisfying munchies! Will definitely be making these again! WOW!!! These are to die for good...I have had my eye on this recipe for months ...saw it a ways back at GR where the photo was featured along with the recipe,it wouldn't get out of my mind but I never noted the instructions- I was so pleased to find it here too - I was saving it for a special occasion and decided to make them for an "Easter Brunch/ Bunny Munch" party...I used a fat heavy hand with the cinnamon, cayenne raisins and walnuts {'cause I am a spicy, nutty fruity type-a-gal } -I made the delish Creamy Cashew Icing (Raw Foods) to go w/ (actually 1/2 a batch was more than plenty) I got 10 rolls...... dehydrated 4 to serve some warm {my personal preference was un-dehydrated and slightly chilled... but these are good every-which ways }- these will be a new Holiday type tradition treat for us. Thanks for a great recipe share... YUM
