This is a delicious chocolate frosting that is not too sweet. It is equally good on chocolate or yellow cakes, and the only frosting I use for my chocolate sauerkraut cake.

2 Cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
In a small sauce pan, over low heat, melt chocolate and butter together, stirring until smooth.
  2. 2
Remove pan from heat, blend in sour cream, vanilla and salt.
  3. 3
Gradually add enough confectioner's sugar to make frosting a spreading consistancy.
  4. 4
    Beat together well (by hand).
  5. 5
    Spread on cooled cake.

Easy (I melted chips and butter in microwave) to make, easy to spread and sets up beautifully. Not too hard but not sticky so it's great if you are transporting the cake. I like the taste of other frostings better but this one gets five stars for looks, texture, etc.

Excellent frosting. I used to top my 3 layer banana cake. It only takes a few minutes to put together and results in a satiny frosting. I will definitely make again.

Dee, this is really good! I find so many frosting recipes end up tasting overly sweet - like drippy, pasty powdered sugar. Not this one! This had great texture (like frosting from a can), was easy to work with, and tastes wonderful (a lot of it didn't even make it onto my cupcakes!) I have Trouble with butter, so I subbed half shortening and half margarine. I also wanted to use up some milk chocolate chips so I did another half and half there. Since I love my KitchenAid, I beat everything together once the chocolate was melted and it was ready quick as a flash. I will definitely make this again and again. Next time, I'm going to try white chocolate chips so I can colour it. Thanks for sharing!
