Chocolate Orange Green Smoothie

Recipe #266414 | 5 min | 5 min prep | add private note

A delicious chocolate-orange delight with over five servings of fruits and vegetables! You won't even realize it has spinach in it.

SERVES 1 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 1 ounce dates
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2-4 cups spinach
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (I prefer Dutch-processed)
  • 2 tablespoons protein powder (optional, I prefer hemp protein) (optional)

Directions

  1. 1
Blend all ingredients well. If you have a very powerful blender, such as the Vitamix, you can simply blend for one minute. If you have a standard blender, blend for one minute, stop, push any stray spinach down into the smoothie mixture, then blend for another 2 minutes, or until smooth.
  2. 2
Pour into a glass and enjoy!

A tasty and sneaky way to get leafy greens into the kiddos. Though I chopped them up, my blender didn't do a very good job with the dates. So I tried it again with no dates and two bananas. Not as sweet, obviously. But I was surprised at how much the dates had accentuated the cocoa. For the banana version, I doubled the cocoa. Reviewed for Healthy Choices ABC Tag.

Liked it! For how healthy this is, it tastes good! I didn't use protein powder but would next time to add a little more sweetness. Made for My 3 Chefs.

Better than I expected...I was worried that it would taste "too healthy" but it was pretty good. I used a frozen banana, 2 medjool dates, 1 big handful of fresh spinach leaves, and used soy protein. It wasn't quite chocolatey enough for me and the color was an off putting green, so I added an additional tablespoon of cocoa powder. It made enough for 2 servings so next time I will cut the recipe in half. Even though I used a frozen banana, I still added ice to make it frostier. I will make again.

I did follow the recipe on this one although I was initially tempted to omit the spinach! I didn't, though, & was very surprised at how well it came out ~ VERY DELICIOUS, especially with the combo of banana, dates & OJ! But I did omit the ice, while using a frozen banana & some OJ that was ALMOST frozen, to give it all a good chill! Cheers for another great smoothie! [Tagged, made & reviewed in Healthy Choices ABC]
