Cheesy Ham Chowder

This is a wonderful Fall recipe. It came from a "Taste of Home" magazine. It is warm, filling and makes quite a bit. One of our favorite soups!

SERVES 10 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

    In a dutch oven or large soup kettle cook bacon over medium heat until crisp.

    Drain.
  3. 3
    In the leftover drippings, saute onion and carrots until tender.
  4. 4
    Stir in flour until blended.
  5. 5
    Gradually add milk and water.
  6. 6
    Bring to a boil.
  7. 7
    Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.
  8. 8
    Add the potatoes, corn, bouillon and pepper.
  9. 9
    Reduce heat, simmer, uncovered for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

    Add cheese and ham.
  11. 11
    Heat until cheese is melted.
  12. 12
    Stir in bacon.

It was good, but too salty and tangy once I added the bacon and cheese. If I make it again, I'll go for just a cream based chowder and omit the cheddar. Good flavor though.

    So tasty and delicious! It was a big hit with my grandchildren! They wanted me to give their mom the recipe so she could make it for them! Loved it!

    This soup was incredible!!! I couldn't stop at one bowl! The flavors of the ham, bacon, vegetables and cheese blended together beautifully. I added an extra 1/2 cup of water, but apart from that, I followed the recipe exactly. This is a keeper!

    I wish I could give this chowder 100 stars. I remember when this recipe was printed and being immediately drawn to it. I have made it several times over the past couple of years and each time it tastes better and better.
