Caramelized Onions

Recipe #295225 | 40 min | 10 min prep | add private note

This is a simple recipe for an all-time classic: sauteed onions. As one of the oldest vegetables known to mankind (and a major player in the American diet), it's quite a versatile little veggie! With so many different varieties, you are sure to find a taste that suits your palate. As a Georgia native, I've got a "sweet spot" in my heart reserved for the Vidalia onion! (Recipe source: "Everyday with Rachel Ray" magazine)

2 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
In a large skillet (cast iron, preferably), melt the butter in the olive oil over medium-high heat.
  2. 2
Add the onions and 1/4 tsp each of salt and pepper, and cook, stirring constantly, until the onions begin to soften (about 5 minutes).
  3. 3
Stir in the sugar and cook, scraping off the browned bits off the bottom of the pan frequently, until the onions are golden brown (approx. 20 minutes).
  4. 4
Storage: Cover and refrigerate cooked onions for up to 5 days.
  5. 5
Serving suggestions: As unlimited as the onion itself, but you may like it on pizza, or try served a top crackers with soft cheeses (like goat or cream cheese). Combine with mashed potatoes for real pizazz, on top of salads, combined with sauteed mushrooms or as a great addition to your omelet.

I am a huge fan of Vidalia onions and I was looking for a good way to eat them with pork chops. Well this is it. It was super easy to make and tasted delicious. I can't wait to try it on some crackers with cream cheese. That sounds to die for. Thank you!!

YUM! This recipe was super simple and super tasty! We couldn't stop just eating them by themselves! I served them on BBQ pork sandwiches but we will be having them in omelets on burgers and steaks and any other possibility we can come up with! Great recipe- thank you!
