Finally, the recipe I was searching for when I "stumbled over" the other 2 I just posted. The website source for this recipe is joycesfinecooking.com/canadian_recipes. Altho not kid-friendly w/whisky in the marinade, it is a sml amt & it appears the marinade could be halved & used to fix adult & kid portions. This recipe caught my eye because I thot it would also work well w/lamb meat. Altho unusual to combine lamb w/oranges, it sounded good to me. Think about it ... lamb, oranges, whole mushrooms & onion (all marinated using this recipe & cooked on the grill). How could that ever be bad? NOT! (Time specified does not include time to marinate) NOTE: While the whisky is shown as an optional ingredient, the recipe author made quite a point to say she NEVER leaves it out.

SERVES 3 , 3 skewers (change servings and units)

Ingredients

1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 garlic cloves (minced)
2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons green onions (chopped)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon rye whiskey (optional)
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 lb steak (top sirloin, tenderloin, strip or rib eye)
2 oranges (peeled & cut in lrg chunks)

Directions

In a lrg resealable bag, combine vinegar, garlic, syrup, onions, whiskey, cloves, salt & pepper. Set aside 4 tbsp of marinade for basting.

Trim fat from steak. Cut into 1" cubes & add to the bag. Seal tightly & refrigerate for 30 min or overnight. Discard marinade used on steak.

Thread steak & orange chunks onto metal or soaked wooden skewers. Place skewers on a greased grill over med-high heat. Close lid & cook 4-5 min per side or till browned but still pink inside (baste w/reserved marinade at least once during grilling).

I found this very same recipe from one of those free recipe booklets the grocery stores leave in the aisles. I did not have any oranges at the time & substituted with what I did have - mangoes. I kept all the remaining ingredients as called for. I had never tried mangoes with a meat before & they turned out fantastic! Everyone loved them! I will definitely try them again...grilling season has started again!!!

On a lark, I decided to try this with chicken. Mainated for about an hour and the results were rather good. I really liked the way the orange, whiskey and maple syrup played together on the palate. My one comment, and this may be because chicken is milder in flavor than beef, was that the cloves seemed a tad too prominent. Can't wait to try this with beef or pork. Thanks.

Delicious and different. The combo of whiskey (got out my bottle of CC for this one!), maple syrup, cloves and vinegar make a rather unique-tasting marinade that is really good. I took Susie D's advice and also interspersed my meat and orange pieces with big pieces of green pepper for both colour and taste (the pepper was very nice skewered on after the orange). Great recipe!
