Not only did this grilled cheese sandwich garner Esquire Magazine's top honors as one of the best sandwiches in America, but the Oprah Show rated it 5 stars also. No cheddar here, but a creative combination of Havarti, mozzarella and the wonderfully-melting Fontina. Add broiled tomatoes, a touch of basil and honey and you've got a sandwich! Cooking time is approximate. From Greg Reyner of Café Muse, Detroit, Michigan.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Butter bread on one side with softened butter. Place in an oven-proof sauté pan large enough for 2 slices of bread, butter side down, over medium-low heat. Put mozzarella on one slice of bread and Fontina and Havarti on the other. Cook until golden on bottom and cheese begins to melt.
  2. 2
Place tomatoes on the mozzarella side and a drizzle of honey on the Fontina/Havarti side. Slide pan under broiler for a few minutes to broil the tomatoes.
  3. 3
Sprinkle basil as desired on top of the tomato, assemble sandwich, and serve.
