This is a very decent substitute for HP Sauce or London Pub Sauce if you can't find them in stores. Makes a first-class barbecue sauce, also.

SERVES 24 -32 , 2 cups, approximately (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Whisk together all ingredients, except browning sauce, until thoroughly mixed.
  2. 2
In a saucepan, bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
  3. 3
Remove from heat, stir in browning sauce, and cool to lukewarm.
  4. 4
Purée the sauce in a food processor fitted with sharp metal blade.
  5. 5
Pour into a bottle, cap tightly, and refrigerate.
  6. 6
Sauce will last very well (about 3 months) in the fridge.

This recipe isn't vegan, since Worcestershire sauce has anchovies, nevertheless, looks good.

I liked this sauce, didn't taste much like HP though. You might like Wal-Mart's steak sauce, tastes almost exactly like HP to me. Also ask your local store if they will stock ex-pat foods you really miss, some will. Brookshires, Tyler, Tx (Broadway store)have a good range of Brit foods and always willing to add more.
