British Breakfast in Bed - Boiled Eggs and Marmite Soldiers

Recipe #291234 | 5 min | add private note
French Tart

By: French Tart
Mar 11, 2008

The quintessential British breakfast, and perfect for breakfast in bed - Boiled Eggs and Marmite Soldiers are a British culinary institution! The following instructions give you a perfect soft-boiled egg, suitable for "dipping" with your "soldiers"! You either love marmite or hate it, don't use it if you cannot find it locally or just don't like it!! You must still cut your toast into "soldiers" however!!

SERVES 1 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 2 medium free-range eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 slices bread
  • butter
  • marmite (optional)
  • salt

Directions

  1. 1
Bring a small pan of water to the boil. Carefully lower in the eggs and simmer for 4 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave the eggs in the water for another 15 seconds before removing with a slotted spoon.
  2. 2
Meanwhile, toast the bread, butter generously and spread thinly with marmite and slice into fat fingers.
  3. 3
Place your eggs in an egg cup and provide a teaspoon and a knife.
  4. 4
Cut the tops off the eggs and eat with the buttery marmite toast soldiers and a little salt.
  5. 5
Cook's note: if you use eggs at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge, they are less likely to crack in the boiling water.

I adore this breakfast! My mom is from Northern Ireland and introduced Marmite to me at a very early age and I love it! I used rye toast with marmite to dip in the eggs. Thank you!

I made this for breakfast this morning and loved it! The marmite with the eggs is so good! I didn't have egg cups, so just peeled and cut up the little soldiers and sopped up the egg. Delicious! Thanks! Made for the Virtual Cruise of Scotland!

Great recipe. I'm an American who married an Englishman, so I had to learn to live with Marmite, and eventually, grew to love it. For all of us non-English/Australian's, the way to break Marmite in gently is to make sure that you butter the bread very generously and spread the Marmite very thinly, and a few slices of good strong cheese go a long way-or spread peanut butter over it. Marmite WILL become addicting if you know how to use it. Thanks for the egg instructions~I can cook about anything but a decent egg~until now!

This is the stuff I grew up on! If you have a British significant other, serve them this in bed for breakfast. You won't believe the gratitude you'll be shown
