Breakfast Strata

Recipe #68404 | 1¾ hours | 30 min prep | add private note

By: Laura70
Aug 5, 2003

This is the only breakfast casserole I make. It's worth the effort. You could probably throw some breakfast sausage in here instead of the ham and bacon. This one has to sit overnight in the refrigerator before baking in the morning.

SERVES 12 -16 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
In a skillet, cook bacon until done.
  2. 2
Remove bacon from skillet, leaving drippings in the pan.
  3. 3
Add ham and onion to skillet.
  4. 4
Cook and stir until onion is tender.
  5. 5
Drain grease from ham and onion.
  6. 6
In a bowl, combine bacon, ham, and onion.
  7. 7
In a greased 13x9x2 baking dish, layer half the bread cubes, potatoes, and cheese, in that order.
  8. 8
Top with all of the bacon mixture.
  9. 9
Repeat another layer of bread, potatoes, and cheese.
  10. 10
In a bowl, beat the eggs.
  11. 11
Add milk, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper to the eggs.
  12. 12
Pour over all in the baking dish.
  13. 13
    Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  14. 14
Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.
  15. 15
Bake, uncovered, at 325 degrees for 65-70 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

Huge hit at my baby shower. My mom used a rustic french bread that was great in it. I would try sprinkling fresh chives on top for color and flavor next time.

I love stratas and they are so great to serve for a large group. They are very filling and easy to assemble. I made this Breakfast Strata with sausage, as I didn't have bacon and ham. It turned out FABULOUS!! I had so many people asking for the recipe. Thanks for sharing it!

I made this dish for mother's day & it's still being talked about at family gatherings. Both my mum & my boyfriends' mother asked for the recipe.. and the best part about it is that it's so easy to make! A definite winner!!!! YUM!
