Bread and Butter Pickles

Recipe #71203 | 50 min | 30 min prep | add private note

This was my dh grandmother's recipe. It is so good. Store-bought pickles don't even come close. This is a good recipe for anyone who would like to try pickling, but hasn't done it before. It's quite straight forward, not a lot of ingredients.

3 quarts (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Combine cucumbers, onions, salt and ice in a large bowl.
  2. 2
    Mix well.
  3. 3
Put a weight on and allow to stand 3 hours. (For a weight, I use a plate with a gallon bottle of vinegar or water on top of it).
  4. 4
    Drain thoroughly.
  5. 5
Combine vinegar, sugar, turmeric, celery seed and mustard seed in a large pot.
  6. 6
    Add drained cucumbers.
  7. 7
Place pot on medium low heat.
  8. 8
Bring almost to a boil, but DO NOT ALLOW TO BOIL.
  9. 9
    Remove from heat.
  10. 10
Seal in sterilized jars, 10 minutes in a hot water bath.
  11. 11
Easy way to sterilize jars: Wash them well in hot soapy water.
  12. 12
    Dry them off.
  13. 13
Put on a cookie sheet, right side up, at 225°F for 15 minutes.
  14. 14
Turn off oven and leave them in there until you need them.

WOW! I wish I could rate more, I gave a jar to my neighbor yesterday and he's already begging for more. So Hubby and I decided we should opened a jar and brought out some Triscuit crackers and cheddar cheese... before we knew it we just had to put it all away! Now we're half a jar short and seeing a shortage for Christmas time... so off to the farmers market we go this Saturday. Thank You so much MaeEast these are AWESOME... can we keep them secret for those special "I'll give you my recipe if you give me yours..." JK... Thanks again ... cheers

I was eating these out of the pot while they were cooking! So delicious and crisp too. This recipe was very easy to follow and use, this being my very 1st attempt of canning. My favorties so far this pickle and a bah salsa recipe!

Mae - I just wanted to thank you for sharing this recipe. My first time making pickles period was 2 weeks ago. I gave them to a few friends and family and I have now made 3 batches in 2 weeks. The taste is better than any store bought pickle and they are soooooo easy to make. I am definitely going to be making more to give as Christmas gifts.

Just opened my first batch of these B&B pickles. I picked this recipe because it seemed to be easy. It was simple and the taste is better than any B&B I have ever had(homemade & store bought).
