This recipe has been a family favorite since my mother cut it out of the L.A. Times back in the '70s. We have used candied cherries, candied pineapple, Hershey's kisses, dates, Andes Mints, and minced, dried apricots (sugar-sweetened and shaped into a ball) as fillings, with different, pastel-tinted frostings and different garnishes for each different type of filling. This is a great family project, and it makes an absolutely stunning gift. This is one of those recipes that you use to impress and pass down to your kids!
