This recipe is from the 1980 copy of the Grace Evangelical Congregational Church cookbook from Muir, Pennsylvania. My Nana saved a copy of the cookbook and gave it to be when I became an adult. The cookbook has seen better days and I thought it would be good to post some of the recipes and keep them alive after the book has fallen apart. Also, I think it is a nice snap shot of the type of recipes these women (largely of Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry) of rural Pennsylvania where making in 1980. The cookbook says this was the recipe submitted by the then Minister of the church, Pastor Harold Smith. My Nana has handwritten next to the recipe "This is almost black and VERY good!'

This was very very good! My son doesn't like cake but he had two pieces of this one. We took it to a superbowl party and the cake was finished even with all the other desserts that were there. I would like to try stronger coffee but it was great how it turned out today too!

I thought this was pretty good. It's quite flexible in that you can add things like hemp seed or chocolate shavings if you like. I added 4 Tbsp hemp seed and sprinkled some peppermint chocolate shavings for added flavor. This recipe is actually enough for 12 cupcakes and a thin cake. I bet you could make a couple of think cakes, spread icing on them, and put them one on top of the other to make a layer cake.

A big thank you, Sarah_Jayne, for sharing this recipe. It is so flavorful and moist., very sponge-like. I added the powdered sugar only to add visual effect because in reality this is so good it needs no additional trapings. I made 24 mini bundt cakes out of this recipe and baked them for 12 minutes. Made for the Comfort Cafe, a tag game.

I grew up with this exact recipe, it is SOOO moist and delicious that it's hard to share! I always asked for this cake with peanut butter icing for my birthday.
