Now, this is the 1st recorded, BASIC Kentucky Derby Pie from Southern Indiana..Just across the river from Louisville, KY, where the Kentucky Derby made this pie famous! (We can't call it "Derby Pie" here because of trademark/copyright issues, but this is the original Kentucky Derby Pie recipe.) I must be honest with you, that ever since this "famous 1st recipe" was used, there have been several other (MODIFIED) versions of this wonderful dessert...Most of them include some sort of Kentucky Bourbon!!! In my opinion, the ones that include that KY Bourbon are the best, but I wanted to share with you the ORIGINAL Kentucky Derby Pie (from the 1920's)...Just FYI...

SERVES 6 -8 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Mix flour and sugar. Add eggs, then butter. Add nuts, chocolate chips and vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly.
  2. 2
Pour mixture into an unbaked pie shell.
  3. 3
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 - 45 minutes. Test with tooth pick; pie should be chewy but not runny -- Bake longer, if necessary.

I've been baking this pie for years and this one will give your pancreas something to do because it is sweet but it is soooo good. I lost my recipe and when I went to look for it on line I found so many that were more complicated and fussy until I found this one that is exactly like I recalled my recipe. I sometimes add bourbon to it but it doesn't often get that far from my glass. I'm going to make it now. Thanks Kitty Kat

Delicious and easy! My six-year old helped make it and then ate it up. Highly recommend this recipe.

Made two of these day before yesterday.... turned out excellent! I used semi-sweet chocolate chips and made it with pecans. The pie crust I left frozen, piled the mixture in and baked it...worked great! I did use self rising flour and added 1 1/2 tablespoons of kentucky straight bourbon.. just the right amount I think. With the self rising flour you want to make sure to only fill the pie shell to about 1/4 to 1/8" below the top of the pie shell - also make sure to put some foil or a baking pan underneath it just in case. Delicious pie, and very close to original "name brand" ones I've ordered several times and paid a fortune for! Thanks so much for the recipe!

This pie is out of this world yummy! It's the real derby pie recipe. I put kentucky bourbon in it (about 4 tsp). I took it to a bbq and it was the hit of the night! Everyone loved it. Easy to prepare and delicious, too. What more could you ask for? denise b. In sc
