Recipe #33330 | 1½ hours | 1 hour prep | add private note

By: Merlot
Jul 7, 2002

Even though this is a very old recipe, I thought it might be something new to the "young whipper-snappers" who have recently joined Zaar. It was always a popular appetizer.

16 appetizers (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Marinate the water chestnuts in soy sauce for 1 hour.
  2. 2
    Drain.
  3. 3
Roll each chestnut in the brown sugar.
  4. 4
Wrap each chestnut with a piece of bacon.
  5. 5
    Secure with a toothpick.
  6. 6
Arrange on a cake rack in a shallow baking pan.
  7. 7
Bake at 400 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. 8
    Drain on paper towels.

NOTE: This can be prepared ahead of time and stored in refrigerator until ready to bake.

Been making these for years. I usually make half of them with water chestnuts and half with pineapple (YUM). They are also great with scallops and shrimp (use less brown sugar though, if any)... mmmmmm good

These were great! Made them for a party and got great reviews from others. I made them ahead of time in the oven, then kept them warm in the crock pot at low temp. My one suggestion is to make sure you line your pan with foil to catch the drippings. Easier clean up and no ruined pans.

Have had these at other people's parties and had to make some myself so of course I browsed the zaar for the recipe and this one stood out for ease & fewest ingredients. I wasn't disappointed (making these is way too easy!)..neither were the samplers at the party I took them to...funny thing is, that plate emptied in no time at all, just like the other reviewers experienced...must be something to that after all! BTW, I used parchment paper on my baking tray which kept the little darlings from sticking.

What a great alternative to bacon wrapped oysters (en brochette). I love those but some people freak out on the oyster idea. So, I made some non-seafood appetizers like this and they sure went quick. I brought them out onto paper towels to make sure no hot grease was pocketed away! The crunchy sweetened water chestnuts are awesome. Thanks in helping me please everyone!
