Bacon With a Vegan!

Tastes remarkably like bacon! I tried a recipe on Zaar and tweaked it. This makes great sandwiches and can be used in stir frys, to top salads, anywhere you might use bacon. Enjoy!

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Heat oil into large skillet.
  2. 2
Fry "bacon" strips on low heat until crispy on the outside. To do this, place them in the pan in the oil and let them simmer for about 10 minutes, without turning. Now they are firm enough to turn easily.
  3. 3
Turn them and simmer another 10 minutes on the other side.
  4. 4
Mix the soy sauce with the liquid smoke and brown sugar, stirring to disolve sugar.
  5. 5
    Remove skillet from heat.
  6. 6
Pour the liquid smoke mixture into the pan and move the tofu around so all sides are coated. Place back on heat.
  7. 7
Sprinkle the nutritional yeast, covering all sides. If you like, sprinkle a little freshly ground black pepper on now. Stir gently until the liquid is gone and the tofu is covered with a crispy coating of yeast. Enjoy!

Mmmhmmm....I agree, this is really something! I've never made tofu this way and am so happy I tried this. Love how quickly it goes together, and everything was in my pantry ready to go. I was a little worried about using that much liquid smoke (had a bad experience with some bbq sauce a few months ago), so I halved the amount. It tasted just right in the bowl, but after finishing the dish, I can see that the full amount of smoke would have been just fine. My 2 yr old and I finished off the entire batch of this together - the first time he's ever really liked tofu, so I'll be making this often. Thanks Sharon!

This is very good and like bacon very chewy. I used half brown sugar and half molasses. I used high protein firm tofu and sliced it very thin. I keep nibbling on them as I write and find that I'm liking it more and more. I'm guessing I would use these as a snack (kind of like jerky since it's rather chewy) since I think it's a bit too chewy (maybe because I sliced it thin like bacon?) for a sandwich. All in all, very tasty.

WONDERFUL recipe! I've been meaning to make my own veggie bacon for a while, and your recipe was the first one I chose to attempt at home. I liked this one a lot becasue it did not require marinating overNIGHT. I was able to slice my tofu quite thin, (a bit thinner than shown in the pictures posted here) and as a result I was able to get it very crispy in the pan. The marinade sauce is sooo simple and sooo good. I almost was tempeted to leave out the nutritional yeast, but I am glad I didn't!! That REALLY made the flavor perfect. I snacked on three pieces of these all morning, and then made some into a veggie BLT! Thank you! I will definitely make this again ^_^

This is much more delicious than the store-bought vegetarian bacons. It's easy to make, and my meat-eating husband liked it too. I used extra-virgin olive oil (I like the flavor and use it in everything), Braggs Aminos, and molasses. I omitted the liquid smoke since I didn't have any on hand and made this on a whim. It was delicious without it, but I'm sure it would taste more bacon-y with it. Next time I might use Central Soyfoods smoked tofu instead of investing in a bottle of liquid smoke. Anyway, this is a great recipe. Thank you for posting it , Sharon!
