A&w Chili Dog Copycat

Recipe #321719 | 50 min | 10 min prep | add private note

I haven't had an A&W chili dog for years, but from what I can remember, this tastes just like it. This is listed as one serving, but the sauce makes enough for about 10 servings unless you use more on your dog like I do. The sauce can be frozen for future use.

SERVES 1 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 frankfurter, 7 . 5-inches long
  • 1 hot dog bun
  • 1 tablespoon white onion, chopped
  • 1/2 tablespoon cheddar cheese, shredded

Coney Island Sauce

Directions

  1. 1
Cook the ground chuck in a pan and break into small pieces.
  2. 2
    Season with salt and pepper.
  3. 3
    Add in the remaining ingredients.
  4. 4
Simmer for about 30 minutes until thickened.
  5. 5
Boil some water in a pot, and add in however many frankfurters you want.
  6. 6
Boil for about 8 to 10 minutes.
  7. 7
Place the frankfurter in a hot dog bun and spread on 3 tablespoons of the.
  8. 8
    sauce you just made.
  9. 9
Spread the cheddar cheese on top, and you're done!

Makes delicious chili dogs! We like to add mustard & chopped onions and Redhot sauce for that final touch. Great football watching & kid-friendly food! Thanks a bunch! ~Sue

Whqt a great recipe this is lazy. My guys love chili cheese dogs and so I knew this would go over in a big way. It definitely did it's job of keeping them happy. I followed your recipe directions exactly other than omitting the onions. preference and all!! Made for Footballtag '08-Week#3~

We have an A&W rootbeer stand not far from us and these chili dogs tasted very close to what we remember. I used a package of ground round that was about 1 1/2 pounds so I added another 1/3 cup of water. Covered and let simmer for the 30 minutes and it was perfect. We just topped our dogs with the sauce and enjoyed them a lot. Cant wait for lunch tomorrow! Served with aHardDaysNight's Hellmann's the Original Potato Salad #304182 and had an indoor picnic for supper. Thank you lazyme for posting this recipe. Made and reviewed for the cookathon.
