Applesauce

Recipe #70097 | 40 min | 15 min prep | add private note

By: Rachel Savage
Sep 2, 2003

My late father only knew how to cook two dishes and this was one. The type of apples you use will determine how mushy your apple sauce turns out. Cooking apples will turn into the texture of commercial applesauce while others will keep their shape even after the cooking. Either way it's delicious. The recipe can easily be doubled (or tripled...or quadrupled) to serve a crowd.

SERVES 2 -6 , 2 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Put the apples and water in a saucepan.
  2. 2
Cover and bring to the boil.
  3. 3
Boil over low heat, stirring occasionally, 20 minutes.
  4. 4
Stir in sugar and cook until it dissolves.
  5. 5
    Add cinnamon or nutmeg.
  6. 6
    Serve warm or cold.

My great aunt used to make a huge country breakfast when we visited in the summers, and I always loved her homemade, warm applesauce. This takes me right back to my childhood, thanks so much! I used brown sugar instead of white and next time I'll use cinnamon only instead of both spices. I can't believe how easy this was!

Yum! I omitted the sugar on this, as I've been going for natural fruit sugars lately and the apples have plenty! I have made this twice now, with a double and a triple recipe. One thing - it took much longer than 20 mins on step 3 - more like 45 mins to an hour for me; probably due to the amount of apples.

This is better than anything I have tasted! I have made it many times and each time it has been very well received. Thank you for a wonderful recipe.
