Apple Butter

Recipe #11492 | 1 day | 1 hour prep | add private note

This is a very easy recipe to make and has always turned out really good for me. The apples cook up to look like applesauce and usually turn sort of dark and tastes great.

6 1/2 pint bottles (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Peel, core and slice enough apples to fill a 4-quart slow cooker or crock pot so full that the lid will not go down over it.
  2. 2
Add vinegar; cook for 18 hours.
  3. 3
If crock pot is fast cooking, cook on high for 10 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. 4
Add white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves.
  5. 5
Put into blender to blend it like apple butter. Mix all together and cook 4 more hours.
  6. 6
    Seal in jars.

Okay, so I wasn't sure how many quarts my crock pot is so I used about 4 lbs of apples total. 18 hours later I added the cinnamon and cloves... much to my surprise it was PLENTY sweet and tasted complete. So instead of adding a bunch of sugar I left it as is. It ended up making only 2 cups of apple butter, and we devoured it within the week. I will be making this recipe again and again!

This apple butter recipe is awesome. I just made my fourth batch of it since Christmas of 2004. I followed the recipe ingredients exactly, using approximately eight pounds of Granny Smith apples to fill my four quart crock pot as directed in the recipe. I cooked the apples on high for 10 hours, added the sugar and spices and cooked an additional four hours on low. All cooking was done with the lid on. The results were 5 1/4 pints of "to die for" apple butter. The sweetness is just right and the consistancy is moderately thick. It is wonderful slathered on toast, bagels, and english muffins. Thanks Brenda
