While this recipe is good anytime it is the first one requested when the fall apples ripen. It was passed to me by a family member. The recipe calls for an 8x8 pan - family member uses a corning ware casserole dish for the baking which makes for a lovely dessert. I often bake it in a pie plate and when cool slice and serve as you would pie. Using white sugar in the crumb crust has it so tasting like pastry. Quick and easy to make.

This is just the best apple dessert! The crumb topping is outstanding. I only made a few changes. I added chopped pecans to the crumb topping and 1 tsp of vanilla to the filling. Great!!!

This smelled heavenly while baking!! It's a nice little surprise for my hubby when he gets home! I scaled it down to 1-2 servings, and it fit perfectly in the dish! I still baked it for 50 minutes though, even though it was a smaller amount. He'll be so surprised! Thanks so much! Made for the ZWT4

I would like to give you more stars, but my hands are tied. This was great. I have always wanted to make an apple pie from scratch, but have been to lazy and perhaps a little apprehensive about making my own pie crust...Well this solved my problem. I made this and the aroma was wonderful. I baked it for about 1 hour(my oven's fault)This wasnt only just easy, It was delicious. The next time, I think I will substitute brown sugar for the regular sugar in the apple mixture. I added vanilla, which enhanced the already yummy taste. I also think the next time I will put the crust in the oven for maybe 10 or 15 minutes to brown a bit and then add the rest. I ate this warm (I couldnt wait for it to cool) with ice cream. The title says it all..Almost apple pie. Thanks for this delicious recipe!!

Your preamble tells it all - quick, easy & the base tastes just like pastry! I added a wee dash of nutmeg to the apples & will probably use some brown sugar in the crumb topping next time - and there will definitely be a next time. Thanx Gerry!
