The Original Rice Krispies Treats Squares

Recipe #96111 | 10 min | 5 min prep | add private note

By: Bec

This is the recipe for the original rice krispies treats squares...It never fails! Plus, it is a great way to use up a box of cereal! For best results, use fresh marshmallows. I have replaced the butter once with Mott's Healthy Baking butter or oil substitute (it was basically an unsweetened apple sauce) and they still turned out great!

SERVES 16 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat.
  2. 2
Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted.
  3. 3
    Remove from heat.
  4. 4
(It would be perfect to be measuring out all of the cereal at this time, having it ready in a large bowl.).
  5. 5
Working quickly, add rice krispies cereal, and stir until the cereal is well coated.
  6. 6
Using a buttered spatula or waxed paper, press the mixture evenly into a greased 13 by 9 by 2 inch pan (or whatever pan you have on hand).
  7. 7
When the treats are cooled, cut into squares.
  8. 8
    Serve, and enjoy!

We loved it. I did melt some milk chocolate chips over the top. Much better than store made.

OH soooo Good! Made these tonight to put in lunches tomorrow. One tip to make this easier is to spray your spoon or spatula with non-stick cooking spray to keep the mixture from sticking. I finally just sprayed my hands with the spray and pressed the mixture into the pan. Thanks Bec for posting this childhood favorite.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I haven't made these in awhile now and so glad I came across the recipe. I split the mixture in half and added milk chocolate chips to one half and just had plain on the other half in the pan. Nice treat to have on hand when you need something sweet. Thanks so much!
