By popular demand, I am posting Linda Cobb's recipe for Cleaning Your Dishwasher. Does your Washing Machine need a cleaning? See my recipe for Cleaning Your Washer ! Brought to you by the book, Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean!

1 clean dishwasher (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
To remove that milky film from glassware and clean the inside of your dishwasher, follow this procedure: Fill the dishwasher with your glassware (no metal, please).
  2. 2
    Use no dishwasher detergent.
  3. 3
Put a bowl in the bottom of the dishwasher and pour in 1 cup of household bleach.
  4. 4
Run through the wash cycle, but do not dry.
  5. 5
Fill the bowl again with 1 cup white vinegar and let the dishwasher go through the entire cycle.
  6. 6
Now you have the film removed from your dishes and the dishwasher clean in one easy step.
  7. 7
To Eliminate Dishwasher Odor: Sprinkle borax in the bottom of the dishwasher and leave it overnight.
  8. 8
Using a damp sponge, use the borax to wipe down the inside of the dishwasher, door and gaskets.
  9. 9
No need to rinse, just do the next load of dishes.
  10. 10
For Dishwasher Rust: To remove rust from the inside of the dishwasher, fill both dishwasher cups with Tang Breakfast Drink and run through the normal cycle.
  11. 11
If rust is bad, several treatments may be required.
  12. 12
When doing this don't put dishes or detergent in the dishwasher.
  13. 13
Dishwasher Spot Stopper: To keep your dishes spot-free, use this formula.
  14. 14
Combine the following ingredients in a container with a lid: 1 cup borax 1/2 cup baking soda To use: Add 1 tsp of the mixture to the dishwasher along with your regular dishwasher detergent.

I had an odor problem and your "recipe" took care of it. What a relief that was. Next time I will probably do the whole dishwasher and glasses cleaning. So glad you posted this Bev. This is really terrific.

I read about a dishwasher detergent substitute that is similiar to steps 13 & 14, except they recommended using more baking powder for hard water, as much as equal amounts of borax and baking soday. Since our water is very hard, I used the equal amounts and still had a film. So I mixed half of the substitute mix with an equal amount of powdered dishwashing soap and no more film. It's still cheaper than using all commercial soap. End recipe for our hard water: 1 part borax 1 part backing soda 2 parts powdered dishwashing soap

A great way to clean the dishwasher, and to give it that clean smell. I tried it on some juice glasses that were cloudy, but I guess they were etched to badly to really get clear. Thanks for posting this easy "recipe". Definately a recipe to keep handy.
