Recipe #87173 | 10 min | 5 min prep | add private note

A nice change from flavoring or sweetening your oatmeal with brown sugar or maple syrup. This is a real treat for kids and kids-at-heart.

SERVES 1 -2 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Heat milk and a pinch of salt in a small saucepan over medium heat until begining to simmer.
  2. 2
Reduce heat and add oats, cocoa and sugar.
  3. 3
Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  4. 4
If you want your oatmeal thick or water, this is where you determine the consistancy- don't stop until it's pretty much at the consistancy you would like.
  5. 5
Cover and let sit for about 5 minutes (this cooks the oatmeal more thoroughtly).
  6. 6
    Remove cover, stir and serve.
  7. 7
Garnish with chocolate chips, nuts, and/or fruit if desired.

I thought this was really good. Nice change of pace for oatmeal. My children weren't too crazy for it, although my 8 yr old son liked it while it was hot. Will definitley make again for me and my son.

I used water instead of milk and splenda instead of sugar. It still came out tasting great! I can't wait to have this one again. Thanks!!

I just made the basic version. First point, the servings are very small and are technical serving sizes a dietician would use rather than the amount you would actually eat. Even my three year old could easily polish this entire recipe off in one go. And that was the doubled version. It is quite sweet even with 2 tsp of sugar. If you are adding sultanas and other dried fruit you may want to cut back on the amount of sugar. Makes a pleasant change to the whole oatmeal routine. Worth a go.

Tried this with steel cut oats and water rather than milk. Can't recommend doing that. Stick with the recipe as written.
