Barefoot Contessa's Challah French Toast

I just watched Barefoot Contessa and she made a romantic breakfast for dinner for her husband. I have posted the other things she made which are "Barefoot Contessa's Hashbrowns" "Barefoot Contessa's Chocolate dipped strawberries" and "Barefoot Contessa's rasberry champagne" she also made sausage links which Im sure everyone knows how to cook in a pan ;>

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

    In a shallow dish large enough to hold three slices of challah side by side, whisk eggs and milk.

    Add orange zest, honey and vanilla.
  3. 3
    Add salt.
  4. 4
    Place three slices of the bread in the egg mixture and let soak about three minutes each side.
  5. 5
    Meanwhile melt one tbsp of butter and oil each in a large frying pan.
  6. 6
    Transfer challah to pan and cook 3 minutes on each side or until nicely browned.

    Add a little more butter for each round of bread.
  8. 8
    If you are making the other recipes transfer french toast to oven until rest of meal is complete.

This was excellent. Since there are only two of us, I cut the eggs down to 2 and used only 1 cup of half and half. I only let the bread soak for a few seconds on each side to avoid sogginess. Also, I used sliced sourdough. Wonderful.

    My hushand and I loved this. We couldn't find the Challah bread, so we used thick sliced white bread instead. I had never thought of using grated orange zest in french toast - but we both really loved the fresh taste it added.

    This was sooo good. Of course I couldn't find challah bread, so I used Hawaiian bread. It turned out wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

    I just got the Barefoot Contessa Family Style Cookbook and tried this recipe. We loved it; it was the best french toast I've ever had. I made the recipe as written, and it turned out fabulous. The outside was a nice golden brown while the inside was creamy and custard-like. If you don't like it that soft on the inside, I would recommend not soaking it for too long as the bread does absorb quite a lot of the egg mixture. I think what makes this recipe special is the challah and the orange zest. Yummy!
