Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for Many

Recipe #63737 | 17 min | 5 min prep | add private note

By: Little Old Me
Jun 5, 2003

I used to babysit a whole gaggle of kids and slow cooking sandwiches on the stove top just wasnt practical! This is a nice oven baked alternative. If you are really in a hurry, use the broiler! (For a full lunch, I would add two slices of turkey or ham to each sandwich)

6 Sandwiches (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Butter each side of the bread slices with 1 t butter or margarine, and place on a baking sheet.
  2. 2
Place cheese on each slice of bread.
  3. 3
    Top with remaining bread.
  4. 4
Bake in preheated oven for 6 to 8 minutes at 450.
  5. 5
Flip the sandwiches, and bake an additional 6 to 8 minutes, or until golden brown.

I made these today for a quick lunch. These were the best grilled cheese I've ever had! They were fast and had almost no clean up. I topped mine with a fresh slice of tomato. Perfect! Thanks for sharing!

I Love these grilled cheese. Perfectly crsipy every time and much less mess. I have been using this recipe for my daycare and the kids always come back asking for seconds. Only suggestion I have is to use a "spreadable" margarine (like Country Crock). It keeps the bread from tearing and making an ugly mess. Otherwise GREAT recipe. Thanks!

This is a great way to make sandwiches for a crowd, and especially useful for thicker breads or sandwiches with additional toppings. The bread gets toasted all of the way through, not soft on the inside like with the pan grilled method. Before the flip, these will look underdone and that's OK, they'll still toast completely on both sides. We enjoyed them! Thanks for a great tip!

I like to lighten up the food I cook, so I used Pam instead of butter. While this works perfectly for grilled cheese sandwiches made on my Foreman grill, it made these sandwiches made in the oven WAY crunchy! My daughter loved it this way. Great idea to make them in the oven. Oh, I also add a touch of mayonaisse to the sandwich.
