Un-Fried French Fries

Recipe #57876 | 1¼ hours | 20 min prep | add private note

By: Kimke
Apr 3, 2003

These look almost as good as they taste. But they are NOT McDonald's fries. At half a gram of fat per serving (versus 16 grams for the same amount of the fried variety) you can munch away guiltlessly. These can become addicting, there was a period where I made these several times a week. From In the Kitchen With Rosie by Rosie Daley

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. 2
Slice each potato lengthwise into 1/4-inch ovals, then slice each ovallengthwise into matchsticks (i use a mandoline which makes this go much quicker).
  3. 3
Coat a baking sheet with 3 sprays of the vegetable oil.
  4. 4
Combine the egg whites and cajun spice in a bowl.
  5. 5
Add the matchstick potatoes and mix to coat.
  6. 6
Pour the coated potatoes onto the prepared baking sheet and spread them out into a single layer, leaving a little space between them.
  7. 7
Place the baking sheet on the bottom shelf of the oven.
  8. 8
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the fries are crispy, turning them every 6 to 8 minutes with a spatula so that they brown evenly.
  9. 9
    Serve immediately.

We liked these a lot! We didn't have any cajun spices so my husband used a different spicy mix, he also cut the potatoes a little thicker than directed. Thanks, this is a great way to enjoy my fries without the guilt. Only 3 WW points per serving.

For "fries" that are not fried these are really good. I used 1 egg white to 1 large baking potato for 2 servings. I sprayed a little circle of cooking spray on a large cookie sheet to hold parchment paper in place and then sprayed the paper also. I've made these a few times now and found that if you wait about 15 to 20 minutes to turn the fries they don't seem to fall apart so much.

Really good for a low fat fry! Crunchy too, which can be hard to achieve without oil. The egg white must be the magic ingredient! I'll be making these again, thanks.

Kim, good "fries" great taste and low fat! I did make mine a little thicker so they did take about an hour and 15 minutes and then turned about every 10 minutes (pain), BUT they were well worth it! BF liked the spice! TY
